A Comment on Facing the Emotion of Fear and Pushing through it.

Sometimes we get caught up in the emotion of fear.  Sometimes experiencing fear on a daily basis will stop us from becoming our possibility, of moving forward in life.  The only solution is to face the emotion of fear.  We must face it directly.  We must surrender to the emotion of fear and move into it, not try to avoid it, if we are to move through and past it.  Sometimes we try to make it go away by using drugs or alcohol.  However, it is only in facing it directly that you start to give it up or let go of the ability of fear to control us, of it directing and ruling my life.  Face it and give up trying to make it go away.  Trying to make it go away is not facing it but avoiding the work.

The fear has been created by our thoughts and beliefs, our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves.  The fear and the thinking process that created it are from our past.  It is only in facing the fear and affirming ourselves a new that we start to transform our life.  We must relax the body, face the fear, and any consequences that we have created as a result of living in it, and start to create our life from the present, by constantly declaring ourselves as different, different from who we think we are from our past.  Facing fear directly gives us the opportunity to give up the fear of our experience of fear.  While not always an easy process it is necessary for one to live differently.

The Dance on the Roller Coaster Ride of Life

Given the importance of self esteem and our lack of it, life sometimes appears as a dance.  One moment we are living in our possibility, feeling that our life is truly transforming, that life itself is full of joy and tranquility.  And in another moment we are gripped by fear, believing that everything will turn out bad, that we will fail at what we are taking on, that there is something wrong with us.  The dance, the going back and forth between these two states, happens daily, sometimes ever hourly.  The dance is part of the roller coaster ride that we as human beings are to participate in.

Our work is to stay, as much as possible, in our possibility, to come to belief that we are, for example, perfect, whole and complete.  There are many practices that we can engage in that will help us with this part of our growth.  The being of our possibility is very fragile and can disappear in a moment leaving us with being our self limiting belief and all of the negative emotions that come with it.  Awareness of the dance and the roller coaster ride is part of the transformation that will set us free from the prison of our beliefs about ourselves.  We need to know that such a dance exists and that we will engage in it from time to time, accepting the fact that the dip part of the ride will happen.

I believe that having structure in my life helps me better accomplish my goals.  This is especially true when there are a variety of projects happening at the same time.  The structure that I create helps me to monitor my efforts and also to be accountable for my actions, my behavior that is essentially directed at achieving what I say I want out of life.  I especially use this approach in my music profession and the project that I have taken on developing or creating for myself.

In my counseling work with clients I always attempt to enroll them into this type of strategy for managing their life.  For the most part, there is a great deal of resistance with respect to the entire goal setting process.  Many clients will go through the process of creating structure and then do not follow through with it.  Some refuse to do it completely.  The resistance to creating structure that will help you to follow through with what you say you want is merely a statement that you truly want to stay the same.  The pay off is that the individual does not have to be responsible for his life.  I believe that the only way we will change or transform our life is through creating structure.

This structure will appear as having a general plan for what you are wanting to do and also a daily action plan.  The general plan is a the goals of what I want to have happen and the daily action plan is how, everyday, I will go about making them happen.  The more specific and positive the goals the better.  The more time and place specific for the daily action plan the better.

To Transform my Life is Work and Requires Accountability..

My own desire to transform my life presents itself every morning that I wake up.  I set my goals for the day and begin the process of working on them.  Monitoring them throughout the day helps but usually I do not get all that I set out to do done.  While one could find fault with falling short with the daily goals, I do not.  I seem to get more done now that I stay present to my daily goals.  This process is even more important for me today as I move into a new venture.

For many years I practiced counseling.  I still do but not as much now.  In addition to being a counselor, I am also a musician.  For years I created music and always wondered what it would be like to offer my music to the world and be able to do it in a manner where I could make a living at it.  Given this notion, I have recently switched my work roles.  Where I worked full time doing counseling I now work full time with my music.

For me the use of monitoring my daily activities is absolutely crucial.  It helps me to be accountable and responsible to myself.   There is always the tendency to not complete on what we take on in life.  This is especially apparent when we start to create something new for our life.  The monitoring of my daily work helps me to stay present to what I truly want to do with my life.  To transform my life is work.

What I have learned, been reminded of recently, that I had forgotten.

The passing of my parents has driven home the idea and powerful concept that all things change, nothing stays the same.  We sometimes get into the mind space that the things in our lives, including other people, will always be there.  We think also that we own things, that they are ours, that we will have them forever.  When we go through the loss of those closest to us we start to transform our thinking in this respect, or at least we are given an opening to create the possibility of a new way of thinking.  I suppose that some people, if not many, never get this and continue to live their lives as if all is the same.  Sometimes we have a moment when something, some event, takes place that either transforms or begins a transformation within us.

Given this new transformation that has and is continuing to take place within me, I am learning that our relationships are all that we truly have in life.  Whether it be about being of service to others or about experiencing love towards another, it is important to pay full attention to it, to definitely not take any of it for granted, to be fully there for the experience.  It will all change, this we know now.  This is a universal law, the way things and life is, everything changes, nothing stays the same.  While we are truly blessed to have the experience, say, of loving another, we need to be fully present to the experience and enjoy it for what it is and for how ever long it lasts.  The teaching is to give ourselves fully to the experience, to be there completely, to not hold back but also to stay present to the fundamental truth that everything changes.  I further believe that this experience, its essence, the love that I experience, for example, that we do take this with us.
