Being of Service: Staying Committed to Your Dream even in the Face of no Payoff

When we do things, especially related to work or a vocation, we expect to receive a reward, to be paid for our work.  Sometimes the pay or reward can be very reinforcing, can motivate us to do even more of what we are wanting to create or develop.  The more we receive a reward the more we want to do, to work towards our dream.

However, the real work for our initial commitment comes when we are not receiving the reward, when there is no pay off.  What do we do when the reward or payoff does not meet the expectation that we have?  For some, their motivation will lesson when there is no or little pay off.  The motivation may lesson even to the point of that person thinking about giving up, giving up the dream.

With my dream I continue to face this particular situation every morning upon rising.  While the payoff that I expect is simply not there at the moment, I work hard at staying committed to my dream.  Some mornings this work is more difficult than it is on other mornings.  While the payoff or reward is important, staying focused on why I created the dream is the most important thing that I have to stay present to.

The why of my dream has to do with me being of service to others.  Dan Millman said it best in the Peaceful Warrior when he said that being of service to others is the highest purpose there is for us.  My dream has to do with me being of service to others with my relaxation music and counseling services.  Staying present to the real purpose will allow me to stay committed to my dream even in the face of no payoff.

The Connection at work and with being of service.

My work is about being of service to others.  I believe that what Dan Millman said in the Peaceful Warrior about the highest purpose is for us to be of service to others.  It is a giving and the creation of transformation for others, through the program of recovery.  It is not that I can change anyone but rather that I can have a conversation about transformation, about them transforming their life.

The message, so to speak, comes from many levels.  It comes from the thoughts I have about something I have read or have been working in my studies.  At times I am not sure where the message comes from.  Tonight was one of those moments.  When I speak in group, for example, there have been times where I believe it was not be speaking, rather something or someone else.  Such a moment happened again tonight.

I believe that what generated the conversation about transformation came from that connection that we practice restoring.  Dyer wrote of this in his book, The Power of Intention.  The connection is to our intention, to that which connects us all to each other, creating unity.

The Peaceful Warrior – Five More Distinctions

There are five more distinctions that are important and of use to those in recovery. The sixth distinction is to consider giving something up, something that you are holding onto that keeps you stuck in your life and addiction. This is a conversation about attachments. The seventh distinction is about taking on a state of mind of not knowing, of getting it that you do not know, a space that will allow you to learn. The eighth distinction is about practing that there are no ordinary moment, that there is always something going on. The ninth distinction is about giving up judgments, that there is a right/wrong, good/bad that exists in the world. Finally, the tenth distinction is about getting it that happiness is to be found in the journey and not the destination. The coachiing for one in recovery is to read the book, The Way of the Peaceful Warrior and begin to practice the distinctions that Millman puts out to the world.
